The Tutorial Programme
The Tutorial Programme or ‘Tutes’ is the College’s own, bespoke and highly tailored personal development programme. We believe there is nothing quite like it available anywhere.
The Tutes programme is embedded into every learning day for every student. Each morning starts with Tutes and we have made space for Tutes to feature in every timetable for every year group through the week. Tutes also encompasses a broad array of compulsory and optional trips and outdoor learning experiences.
Tutes prepares students for the future and helps them become the people they mean to be. This programme is one of the ways we deliver our main aim for all our students: equipping them to become compassionate contributors to society and courageous shapers of the future.
The Tutes programme includes:
Everything from adventurers sharing their stories of survival to parents explaining their own working lives – and sometimes both!
As part of our commitment to oracy, civil discourse, and creative ideas, we organise debate sessions for every student via tutes activity.
This element (known as PSHE in many schools) teaches young people how to grow, develop, and make choices. It includes units including Relationships, Sex and Health Education and preparation for independent adult life.
Our commitment to true co-education and to fairness and equity for all drives an ambitious and meaningful programme designed to support students as they continue to build a fair and equal future.
Working out how to blaze a trail in a changing world. We don’t just focus on the standard careers talks and fairs, important as they are.
We’re looking at degree apprenticeships, entrepreneurship, third sector, creativity in an age of machine learning – and working with leading partners at the centre of innovation in technology and work. All young people need to be familiar with the technologies changing the world, and above all they need the human and creative qualities that will see them thrive, no matter what the future brings.

Reading remains perhaps the single most important way to develop empathy and communication skills. It is built into our prep schedules and has protected space in the Tutes programme.
One of our flagship reforms. We teach psychology, including elements of neuroscience and behavioural theory, to every student from the Lower Fourth (Year 7) to the Upper Sixth (Year 13). Above all this teaches the gift of self-understanding, which unlocks almost everything else.
In the Fourth Form, the Tutes programme also includes specific project-based learning as part of our College Baccalaureate, giving all students a taste of our revolutionary Thomas’ Qualifications (TQs), so they are ready to make their academic choices in later years.
Time is also made available via Tutes to support AWE: our sector-leading programme of outdoor learning for all students.
